Tim Quilty vows to fight Premier's emergency powers extension
Liberal Democrats Member for Northern Victoria Tim Quilty has renewed his vow to fight Premier Daniel Andrews’ attempts to extend emergency powers for 12 months.
Describing the prolonging of what he called ‘common-sense’ rules, Mr Andrews claimed he wanted to protect public health.
But Mr Quilty said the Premier has another goal.
“The emergency powers are being used to control the Victorian people,” Mr Quilty said.
“Instead of using persuasion and common sense, the Government has gotten drunk on the power they have to force compliance.
“And it is not as if they are competent to be trusted with these extraordinary powers – the Government themselves allowed the virus to escape from the quarantine hotels.
“Victoria has endured the most rigid controls in the country and at the same time have the worst results – this should be a massive warning sign to the Premier and his Cabinet.
“The lockdown is going to be responsible for vastly more death and human suffering than we would have had without a lockdown.
“A famous quote defines insanity as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results, a definition I would apply to our Premier.
“Our communities are being smashed, small business owners are going under, students are suffering disrupted educations and mental health and wellbeing are being completely ignored.
“And for what?
“Our civil liberties have been steadily eaten away and the Andrews Government proudly tells us we are to suffer even more.
“Enough is enough.”
Mr Quilty said the message to the Premier will be simple. “No. No more. It has to stop. I don’t trust you with these powers.
“I will be happy to tell Mr Andrews about the flood of emails and phone calls I have received over the past few days, all of which express disgust at his proposal,” Mr Quilty said.
“I have been a constant critic of this Government’s lockdowns not just because I think they are wrong, but because regional Victorians are telling me it’s wrong.
“This Government is trampling on our freedoms without a single thought to the long-term side-effects.
“I will not stand by and watch this happen.”
