Tim Quilty frustrated by lack of information for border residents as NSW closure nears

Liberal Democrats Member for Northern Victoria Tim Quilty has expressed his extreme frustration at the lack of information for Victorians who will need to cross the border into NSW after it is closed at 11.59 tonight.

After the announcement yesterday of the closure, Mr Quilty’s office began receiving calls and visits from constituents seeking information about what they should do when the border closes.

The Wodonga-based MP has called on his neighbour Bill Tilley, Member for Benambra in Victoria’s Lower House, to see if the Liberal Party member can help provide answers.

“I am incensed that the border is closing in the first place, wrecking the lives of ordinary Victorians who have done nothing to deserve what the Andrews Government has allowed to happen,” Mr Quilty said.

“Realistically, despite Dan Andrews’ claims to the contrary, this was a decision made in Sydney, to appeal to Sydney voters, and so I have been seeking information north of the border. With no luck.

“I am hoping that Member for Benambra Bill Tilley, a member of the Liberal Party in Victoria, may have more success in getting, and then sharing information from his NSW Liberal colleagues.”

Mr Quilty pointed out the wealth of information on punishments contrasts with the amount of detail which will help border residents.

“We have all been reading the steps which NSW Police will be taking to stop Victorians crossing the border and the range of punishments which await us,” Mr Quilty said.

“But when it comes to detail on what we must do in order to continue our lives unimpeded, there has been silence.”

Mr Quilty said attempts by his office to seek information from NSW had been ignored.

“While I accept that theirs is a different Parliament, different State and a different police force, as a Member of Parliament in Victoria which borders NSW, I would have expected some degree of assistance from the NSW government,” Mr Quilty said.

“This was presumably not a decision made over breakfast yesterday – border closures have always been a possibility and the work to enable free passage of border residents should have been completed by now. If there was really no preparation, it would suggest that the NSW Government could be as incompetent as the Victorian one.

“My attempts to contact Minister Dominello’s office about the ServiceNSW website have been ignored.

“The border closes in 10 hours and there is no information available to help Victorians.

“I hope Mr Tilley can find out as much as he can to help us all remain within the rules.”
