Tim Quilty, David Limbrick condemn extension of Government's emergency powers

Liberal Democrats Member for Northern Victoria Tim Quilty and his Melbourne-based colleague David Limbrick will vehemently oppose any extension of emergency powers in Victoria.

Mr Quilty said it was time to end this dystopian nightmare.

“The freedoms of Victorians are currently being trampled on by a few unelected officials who treat adults like children and won’t even allow children to go to school,” Mr Quilty said.

“The closures of national parks in our regions and curfews in Melbourne are equally nonsensical. People who forget to wear a mask or go to a supermarket outside a specified zone are not criminals and should not be treated as such.

“Our civil liberties have been taken by grasping emergency powers under an enabling act, and it has been an epic failure. Our freedoms are precious, and we are here to demand them back.”

Mr Limbrick said the Government should recognise it has made a fundamental mistake by believing that police could beat the coronavirus.

“Victoria has had the strictest lockdowns in Australia and the worst results,” Mr Limbrick said.

“Victorians are capable of following sensible directions. We should not have to live in fear about being fined for driving a few kilometres away to do exercise or working without a permit.

“We are now seeing incidents where police are putting themselves and others in danger because people are breaking arbitrary rules.

“The Government has had more than enough time to get their house in order, so the emergency powers must end.”
