Tim Quilty closes Wodonga office, but is concerned by coronavirus restrictions
Liberal Democrats Member for Northern Victoria Tim Quilty has closed his electorate office in Wodonga as part of the increasing measures to contain the spread of the COVID-19 virus, but is concerned that people’s freedoms are being rapidly eliminated.
As the number of cases in Victoria reached 821 and stage three restrictions were introduced, Mr Quilty took the decision to protect the health of his office staff and the public.
“The office isn’t set up to prevent the spread of a virus – I can’t have staff working close together in the middle of this epidemic,” Mr Quilty said.
“I won’t risk my staff – or the public – coming into the office during the crisis.
“As we’ve all discovered, it’s hard to follow the social distancing rules – not shaking hands or standing closer than 4 m apart – but we need to do it.
“However, my team and I are all working remotely and it is pretty much business as usual.
“If anybody wishes to contact me, they can email me at [email protected] or by calling the regular office number 02 6048 6288, which we’ve diverted to the staff working at home.”
Although Mr Quilty acknowledges the importance of containing the virus, he is concerned that the measures being taken will do long-term economic harm and that the restrictions of freedom will remain after the pandemic is halted.
“Every day we see more and more announcements of job losses, we see restrictions on people’s ability to move about and threats to use severe sanctions against Victorians citizens,” Mr Quilty said.
“I know the majority of us are doing the right thing and we don’t need the government looking over our shoulders. I will be carefully watching to make sure the Victorian and Federal Governments wind these restrictions back as soon as possible.
“It is alarming to see the damage being done by these current measures and I am not at all happy at the trampling of our freedoms.
“The Liberal Democrats will oppose further measures to attack our freedom unless the government can spell out the actual plan and the path back to normality.”
